A rotating shift schedule repeats a fixed sequence of workdays and rest days. The pattern becomes a real calendar only after it is anchored to a known cycle date and assigned to a team.
Patterns are cycles, not calendars
“Four on, four off” describes an eight-day cycle. It does not tell you which dates you work until you identify one confirmed day in the cycle.
Common rotation patterns
A 2-2-3 pattern alternates short blocks and often produces every other weekend off. DuPont and Panama rotations distribute twelve-hour coverage across teams. Four-on/four-off is simpler but moves through weekdays continuously.
Check hours across the full cycle
Weekly averages can mislead because some weeks contain more scheduled shifts than others. Calculate total hours across the complete repeating cycle, then divide by the number of weeks represented.
Use a generated calendar
A personalised calendar makes PTO, weekends and handoffs visible. Exporting it to a calendar app reduces the chance of reading the abstract pattern incorrectly.
Check the anchor with a date you already know
Before exporting a year, generate a short range and compare it with a confirmed workday and a confirmed rest day. If both are displaced by the same number of days, the cycle anchor is probably wrong. Changing a four-on/four-off pattern to a different pattern will not fix an incorrect anchor. After changing the anchor, export a fresh file; a previously imported calendar does not update itself. Keep one copy of the schedule so repeated imports do not clutter your calendar with duplicates.

Why do my four-on/four-off days move each week?
The rotation is eight days long while a calendar week is seven. Its start shifts through the weekdays; repeating a fixed weekly template will eventually show the wrong dates.
Will an imported calendar update automatically?
No. An ICS download is a snapshot. If the roster changes, generate a new file and replace the old imported calendar to avoid duplicate events.
Does this assign crews or day and night shifts?
No. It marks one person’s repeating work/rest dates. Confirm crew offsets, start times, rest requirements and any swaps in the employer’s official roster.
Will a repeating cycle follow the same weekdays every week?
Only when the cycle length aligns with seven days. An eight-day four-on/four-off cycle shifts its weekday position over time.
